Although commonly known as the Peebles Hydro its full name is Peebles Hotel Hydropathic. Hydropathic was a 19th century word for an establishment where people went to take a water cure. The demand for hydropathic establishments grew during this time as well-to-do city dwellers wanted to escape from the smoke and pollution of the industrial revolution and enjoy the benefits of fresh air. Building work on Peebles Hydro began began in 1878 and was completed by 1878. Guests were offered a wide choice water cures and over the years more were added according to the latest ?scientific? theories, or fads or fashions. Baths, showers and poultices were not the only forms of treatment prescribed. There was also and electro-therapeutic department with all the best Continental electric instruments and apparatus, using electricity generated from the Hydro itself. On Friday 7 July 1905, a chimney went on fire in the kitchen leading to the top floor of the hotel, which soon became out of control, destroying the old building. The iconic building we know today was opened on 22 March 1907. The Hydro has been host to many events Scottish Lawn Tennis Association matches, and a hospital for soldiers during WW2 Today, Peebles Hydro is a four star hotel and spa for all seasons and all ages, with many guests returning year after year. This is a traditional, historic building having originally been built in 1878 and then re-built infollowing a fire in 1905.
