History
Palais Coburg, withal referred to as Palais Saxe-Coburg, is a mansion in Vienna, Austria. The Kohary branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha were the owners in the past.
Designed in 1839 by architect Karl Schleps in Neoclassical style, Palais Coburg was built from 1840 to 1845 by Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha atop the Braunbastei (Brown Bastion), a component of the Vienna city defenses dating to 1555. It’s sobriquet is the Spargelburg which means "castle of asparagus". It was denominated so for its central portico with many separate columns.
Princess Aurelia of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was the last person to privately own this palace. She was a widow of a prince, who resided there with her family.
